How and when can I schedule a residency?
Residencies are scheduled year-round, with the exception of mid-June until mid–August, and during the two weeks from Christmas to New Year. All dates are agreed in advance with the programme’s Creative Director and there is normally a minimum 90-day lead in. Note that space fills-up fast and we often programme 6-9 months in advance, so please keep this in mind when applying, being flexible with dates is also very helpful.
Apply via downloading the application form from our website, www.artistresidencythailand.com
What is the duration and cost of a residency?
Residency duration is negotiable, but is normally between two weeks–one month. All residencies are free of charge.
From 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday – Friday, 40% of your time will be spent delivering engagement opportunities. The rest of your time, including all evenings and weekends, are free to work or relax.
Note that schedules are programmed in partnership with participants, so as to ensure that your preferences regarding studio access, work and free-time are taken into account
Where do I stay?
You will be provided with either a studio flat, or private villa. All accommodation comes with an ensuite bathroom, refrigerator, writing table, bicycle and swimming pool access.
Where do I work?
In addition to your apartment you will have access to the 90m2 airconditioned residency studio and if needed, evening access to our wood, ceramics and metalwork facilities. In consultation and agreement with the Creative Director, practitioners may also wish to work in other areas of the campus, or make use of facilities such as our Dance Studio.
What day to-day facilities do I have access to?
We will provide you with three, freshly prepared, complimentary meals per day and tea and coffee are provided in the studio space. Residents also benefit from access to a private swimming pool and use of a bicycle. For a nominal fee, practitioners also have access to tennis courts, golf driving range, spa treatments and Thai cookery lessons.
What is expected of me while in residence?
The focus and priorities of any resident will differ depending on a number of factors. Some practitioners work towards defined production goals, some seek dialogue on the development of ideas, others want to focus entirely on developing their skills as workshop leaders. Generally speaking the residency will be split between time to focus on your own work, and the delivery of workshops and master-classes. This split is approximately 60% free studio time and 40% delivering workshops. Workshops are only conducted between the hours of 0900 and 1600 Monday-Friday and practitioners have full access to the studio during the evenings until 2200. Two days of the week are free of any engagement. Time is carefully managed to ensure that you can focus on your own work production and the timetable for workshops, or master-classes is always created and agreed upon in partnership with you and the programme director.
What does the workshop component look like?
All workshops are planned with and supported by the programme’s director. You will be given the professional support and mentoring necessary to develop as a workshop leader and have opportunities to work with young people from three years to eighteen years of age, from more than thirty different countries
There are also opportunities to deliver workshops with a range of community groups and local organisations Age ranges and workshop content are always agreed in partnership with each practitioner and you will have full support in all workshops and masterclasses.
Participants are only ever expected to work with skills, materials and age ranges that they feel comfortable with and have been agreed upon
Are there internet and other services?
There is Internet access across the campus and in your apartment/villa and studio. There are various facilities on campus including a coin-operated laundry, café, restaurant and small shop, selling basic amenities
Can I receive mail and packages?
Materials for your work can be sent ahead of your arrival. We recommend that you use DHL or FedEx, as delays may occasionally be experienced if using other other methods.
Are there exhibition opportunities?
We do not have a dedicated exhibition space on-campus, but we do have relationships with city-based galleries and can make those introductions on your behalf.
Do I need a car?
It is very helpful to have a car or a motorbike during your stay, but it is not essential. We will provide you with a pushbike for the duration of your stay, this is the transport of choice for the campus and the surrounding villages. It is about thirty-minutes’ drive to Chiang Mai city and the organisation provides a complimentary van service to the city three times per week. There is no regular public transport from the residency to the city, but private hire transport options are available, including services such as Uber.
An International Driving Licence is highly recommended, but not essential.
Can I bring family, friends, pets?
Guests who are not part of the residency can be discussed on a case by-case basis.Non-residency guests will incur additional costs for independent airport transfers and any required meals. Pets are not allowed.
